For Physicians

Physician Referrals

For Quick and Easy Evaluation and Treatment of your patients with Sleep Disorders or Attention Disorders, send them to the Sleep & Attention Disorders Institute. Dr. Bart Sangal, MD, will personally evaluate each patient. Fill out the Referral Form, print it and fax it to us.

Quick, No Waits: We promise that, 90% of the time, we will offer at least one new patient evaluation appointment time within a week of the patient calling. We will offer a testing slot within a week of the first appointment. We will offer a follow-up appointment to discuss test results within a week of the testing.

Great Communication, Fast Results: We will send you the evaluation, test results, and office notes within 24 hours of each visit. We will do this every time.

Best Quality: The Sleep & Attention Disorders Institute is an American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) accredited sleep disorders center (link to pdf of cert). It is the oldest accredited sleep disorders center in Oakland and Macomb counties, having been continuously accredited since 1987. Dr. Sangal (link to CV page) trained at Johns Hopkins University Hospitals. He is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology in Sleep Medicine, as well as in Clinical Neurophysiology. He is a Professor at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine. He has written over 50 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals (link to publications page). We use Electronic Medical Records and a Patient Portal. We have easily achieved Meaningful Use Stage 2, and have a 100% on the PQRS. We have qualified for every Medicare incentive.

Happy Patients: We are constantly doing surveys of our patients. The vast majority of our patients are happy with what we do and how we treat them.

We Treat All Sleep Disorders: If we tell your patient we found Sleep Apnea, you may rest assured your patient has Sleep Apnea. If we do not find Sleep Apnea, we will treat whichever sleep disorder we find. We evaluate and treat the entire gamut of sleep disorders, including snoring and sleep apnea, hypersomnias and narcolepsy, insomnia, parasomnia, sleep related movement disorders, and circadian rhythm sleep disorders.

We Offer Home Sleep Apnea Testing as well as in-center sleep testing (Polysomnography): Keep in mind that Home Sleep Apnea Testing is not as reliable, and has a high rate of inconclusive testing. It does not record sleep and can only be used to diagnose Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Absence of Sleep Apnea on Home Sleep Apnea Testing is not conclusive. Such a test must be repeated as an in-center Polysomnography. We work with insurance company requirements and mandates, and will do what is best for your patient keeping in mind the insurance company requirements.

Our Patients Use Their CPAP: National statistics show that only 60% of patients on CPAP are compliant with their CPAP. We work closely with our patients to help them become compliant. This may mean additional office visits for patients struggling with CPAP. However, the end result is that 90% of our patients are compliant with their CPAP!

We Bring a Unique Approach to Attention Disorders: The FDA has approved an EEG-based test to confirm the diagnosis of attention deficit (ADD/ADHD) in children with symptoms of attention deficit. Dr. Sangal has published a paper on an improved test which is not affected by drowsiness or by age. He has also published papers on using EEG recorded during attention-dependent tasks (cognitive evoked potentials) to predict which patient will respond robustly to which medicine. We do not put every patient who has some attention symptoms on stimulants like methylphenidate or amphetamines. Before treatment, we make sure to confirm the diagnosis of primary attention deficit. We use non-stimulants as well as stimulants, and aim to fully control and normalize your patient’s attention deficit. We also evaluate memory dysfunction (Mild Cognitive Impairment).

We Are Less Expensive: As a physician office, we charge less than half of what hospital centers charge. Insurance companies pay us less than half of what hospital centers get paid. This results in lower cash outlays for your patients (as co-pays, co-insurances and deductibles). This also makes you look less expensive and gives you a better quality rating.

We Take Every Insurance (Just About): We participate in virtually every insurance.

We Treat All Ages: We treat children as young as 1 and adults age 100 or more for sleep disorders. For attention disorders, we treat from age 5 to over age 100.
We Make It Easy for You to Refer: We are aware of all the pre-certification and pre-authorization requirements. We will do the pre-certifications and pre-authorizations so your office does not have to.

We Will Work With You Any Way You Want: Take a look at our referral form. Want us to evaluate, then test and treat your patient? We will do that. Want us to test only and return to you for treatment? We will do that, too. Want us to evaluate and test, then send the patient back for treatment? Sure, we will do that. Want to set an AHI parameter, and have us treat your patient above a certain AHI, sending the patient back to you below that AHI? Absolutely, we can do that. Dr. Sangal is Accessible: You can call him. He will take your call or call you back. You can run a patient scenario by him or ask him for advice.

Try Us. You Will Like Us. Fill out the Referral Form, print it and fax it to us. We will call your patient right away and make an appointment.
