Attention Disorders

Experienced Michigan Doctor Diagnoses and Treats Attention Deficit Disorders

We have all been in situations where our minds wander. We find ourselves not paying attention. This may be normal. However, what if we often have trouble paying attention? Or we often notice difficulty remembering information. That may suggest an attention disorder. Both children and adults have attention deficit disorders. When an attention disorder is diagnosed correctly, a patient can be successfully treated. This means more success at work and school. It also means better relationships and quality of life.

At the Sleep & Attention Disorders Institute in Sterling Heights, Mich., Dr. R Bart Sangal will use the best tests to diagnose you. For attention deficit, these tests will also tell Dr. Sangal which medicine is best for you or your child. We are located in the Greater Detroit area where Sterling Heights meets with Troy, Rochester Hills, and Shelby Township.

What is an Attention Disorder?

An attention disorder affects the ability to register information, concentrate, or recall information.

What is Attention Deficit (Attention-Deficit Disorder – ADD, or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder – ADHD)?

The most common attention disorder is Attention Deficit. It is also called Attention-Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). It is a brain disorder. It runs in families. It starts in childhood. It persists into adulthood.

How do you know if you may have ADD/ ADHD?

  • You may have difficulty focusing.
  • You may get distracted easily.
  • You may be forgetful.
  • You may lose things.
  • You may be impulsive.
  • You may have difficulty remaining seated.

Many doctors diagnose attention deficit based on what you tell them. Some perform psychological testing. This measures ability and learning disabilities. Unfortunately, it does not really confirm attention deficit. Even so, if a doctor suspects ADD/ ADHD, stimulants are usually prescribed. These may or may not fully control attention deficit.

The FDA is concerned about overuse of these medicines in children. Some children who are prescribed medicines may not need them. Others may be prescribed medicine which is not the best for them. And many adults who need treatment are not treated. At the Sleep & Attention Disorders Institute, Dr. Sangal will only prescribe medicine after testing to confirm the diagnosis. And he will prescribe the right medicine for each and every patient based on painless brain wave mapping testing.

Please do not expect a prescription for medicines at the first office visit. Prescriptions will be issued if and as necessary after all testing has been completed. If you are looking specifically for amphetamines such as Adderall rather than the medicine that we determine is the best for you, it would be better for you to go elsewhere.

What is Mild Cognitive Impairment?

MCI (Mild Cognitive Impairment) is a common attention disorder in the elderly. It affects recent memory. Other intellectual functions are normal. MCI may or may not progress to dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

At the Sleep & Attention Disorders Institute in Sterling Heights, Mich., Dr. Sangal will do testing. Neuropsychological testing tells us if memory is impaired. EEG-based testing looks at cognitive function. Other tests look for treatable causes and risk of Alzheimer’s. If you or someone you know is suffering from MCI, we can help. Call Dr. Sangal for an appointment today.

Diagnosing Attention Deficit

ADD/ADHD in Children

The FDA has approved a test to confirm the diagnosis of ADHD in children. Dr. Sangal will use this painless EEG (brain wave recording) test, plus a better test he developed, to confirm ADD in children. EEG brain mapping also tells us which medicine might work best. There are many medicines available to treat ADD/ADHD. Some are stimulants, some are not. Rest assured, Dr. Sangal will choose the correct medicine for your child. He treats to fully control attention in children.

ADD/ADHD in Adults

Attention Deficit does not go away with age. It persists into adulthood (Adult ADD/ Adult ADHD). Hyperactivity gets better. Inattention does not. Dr. Sangal will use EEG based testing to confirm attention deficit. Once he confirms the diagnosis, testing will tell which medicine will work best for you. He will prescribe the best medicine for you. He will not be satisfied until your attention disorder is fully under control.
